Telephone Help - Duet Phone and Fax

Duet Phone and Fax allows you to have 2 separate phone numbers for voice calls and fax calls on a single home phone line.  Duet Phone and Fax is an optional enhanced service that can be used on your home phone. A fax machine with distinctive ring capability is required.

• Duet Phone and Fax allows you to have 2 numbers connected to the same home phone service - one number for voice calls, the other for faxes.
• A distinctive ringtone tells your fax machine when a fax transmission is incoming.
• Give family, friends and business associates a separate fax number.
• Distinguish fax calls from voice calls by different ringtones.
• Make outgoing calls from the secondary (fax) number using an override prefix.
• Calls made using the override prefix will be billed to the secondary fax number while all other call charges are defaulted to the primary voice number

Making a call from your Duet Fax number 

Wait for dial tone

• Press * 11 * 3 # (the override prefix)
• Wait for dial tone
• Dial the fax number
• Hang up.

Using Call Control, Call Forward or Call Waiting on your Duet Fax number

• Press * 11 * 3 # before the required command sequence.
• For example, to turn on Call Waiting:
• Wait for dial tone
• Press * 11 * 3 #
• Wait for dial tone
• Press * 43 # (the command sequence to turn on Call Waiting)
• Hang up.

Costs of Using this Service
This service has a monthly charge. Normal call charges apply.

What equipment do I need?
You will need a fax machine capable of recognising the distinctive Duet ringtone (repetition of 3 short rings, pause, 3 short rings).

Does the Duet Phone and Fax service allow me to use the phone and the fax at the same time?
No, because Duet Phone and Fax uses one phone line, the services cannot be used simultaneously.

What other home phone services can I use with Duet Phone and Fax?

• Call BackCalling Number Display
• Call Forward
• Call Waiting can be switched on for both numbers. However it should be switched off temporarily to send faxes.
• Call Control can be activated on both numbers. Each number will have a separate Personal Identification Number (PIN).

What services are not available with Duet Phone and Fax?

• Smart Ring cannot be used on either number. The Duet Fax number does not support:
• Abbreviated Dialling
• Delayed Hotline
• 3-Way Chat
• MessageBank.

How do I stop my answering machine from picking up incoming Duet Fax calls too soon?

• If your fax machine doesn’t have the chance to answer calls, extend the number of rings before your answering machine responds. Refer to your answering machine manual for instructions. 

Do I need to turn off Call Waiting to send a fax?

• Yes, Call Waiting should be temporarily disabled when sending a fax as Call Waiting tones may interrupt fax transmissions.

What is the override prefix?

• The override prefix is *11*3#.

Can I choose the Duet Fax number?

• No, we are not able to guarantee phone numbers.

Can ADSL work with Fax Duet Line?

• Yes, by signing up with your primary number not the fax duet's number.

Can each number be billed to a separate account?

• No, both numbers must be on the same account.

Do I pay a monthly charge for my Duet Phone and Fax number?

• Yes, this service is charged at the rate of $7.19 per month. Requires phone with distinctive ring capability.

Can I use Smart Ring with a Duet Phone and Fax service?

• No, Smart Ring is not compatible with Duet Phone and Fax.
